What are the most interesting aspects of building new roadways in the 165-year-old city?
March 6, 2025
New Westminster was incorporated in 1860, which makes it one of the oldest cities in British Columbia. Suitably to its age, there are lots of abandoned old underground utilities and we are discovering plenty of those last-century pipes as we progress through our project.
As much as we would like to get excited about our ''archeological'' discoveries, it can create a fair bit of investigating to see if they are indeed old and abandoned and can be removed, or if we need to alter our design and do a field fit. After 10 months of hard work at the Royal Columbian Hospital site, we are entering the final stretch of this major project as we are now on Sherbrooke. Compared to the phase on the East Columbia section, vehicle flow is relatively lighter, but busy pedestrian traffic still remains to be another challenge. Despite it being very busy and congested job site, we have built approx. 450 meters of curb and gutter, 450 meters of sawcut pattern concrete buffer strip, 750 square meters of sawcut sidewalk and 800 square meters of bike path for Sherbrooke. We have also completed about 280 cubic meters of excavation for this section as well. The All Roads project team has worked very closely with Elis Don, the City of New Westminster, and our project foreman Mike Broadfoot and the lead hand Damon McArthur have played crucial roles to keep this very complex project on schedule and budget. As our concrete and paving crews start putting on the finishing touches, our excitement and pride is growing bigger and bigger for giving a modern new look to the oldest neighborhood of the oldest city in our province. Well done, All Roadsters!
